Roma
Dag allemaal,
De reis verliep voorspoedig en we waren op tijd in Rome. Het kan zijn dat iemand zijn paspoort in de bus liet liggen op weg naar Eindhoven maar gelukkig konden we op tijd in Eindhoven vertrekken. In Rome hebben we de bus genomen naar Anzio, ongeveer 40 km van Rome. Het hotel ligt aan zee maar het is niet echt weer om er in te springen hoewel sommige leerlingen wel zouden willen. Dus na een strandwandeling of voetbal kijken naar bed voor een daguitstap naar Tivoli,

la première visite était celle d'une villa : la villa Adriana.
La villa Adriana est très grande par rapport à l'idée que l'on avait d'une villa. Ce matin il faisait plutôt chaud et tout le monde avait soif. Si bien que lorsque nous avons vu une fontaine tout le monde s'est jeté dessus ce qui nous a fait un arrêt de 15 minutes au milieu de la visite. La villa Adriana, était tellement grande qu'elle disposait de ses propres thermes et qu'il y avait une sorte d'île où Adrien pouvait s'isoler du reste de la villa. Hugo 3F
La villa Gregoriana était magnifique du fait de ses grandes cascades dont une de plus de 120 mètres, une des plus grandes d'Europe. La marche était plutôt fatigante à cause du fort dénivelé et l'on était tous contents de remonter dans le bus. Il y avait peu de ruines et le côté nature était vraiment reposant - même après ces centaines de marches à gravir. Moïri 3F
De eerste dag in een ander land is altijd wennen. Dus na een korte nacht om 6.30 op. Na het ontbijt werden we naar Tivoli gebracht. Daar hebben we de Villa Adriana bezocht die was erg indrukwekkend door zijn grootte. Na de site te hebben bekeken deden we ons te goed aan ons iets te taaie brood. Villa Gregoriana stond ook op het programma. Het waren twee mooie tempels en het was ook een mooie waterval. We hadden nog niet genoeg van sites en bezochten daarom nog Villa d Este. Ik vond de tuinen erg indrukzekkend met al die fonteinen. Het avond eten was wat minder. De pasta was behoorlijk hard, gaan morgen naar een ander hotel hopelijk beter eten. Wytse 5N

Whilst our first day in Rome was one in which we visited three so-called 'villas' in Trivoli, the word 'domestic' or 'homely' is not one which springs to mind for these ornate buildings. For sites built in such splendor as these, the term 'villa' perhaps seems a bit of an understatement. After all, how many of what we know as 'villas' can really boast paintings on their ceilings, or waterfalls in their back garden?! Our first visit of the day was to the 'Villa Adriana', which was built following the orders of emperor Hadrien. Hadrien's failure to comply to the pugnacious stereotype of many of the roman emperors was clearly visible in this spectacular site, providing outlets for all of Hadrien's passions; Philosophy, solitude and the Arts. The tragedy as far as I perceived it, was that Hadrien himself never inhabited his creation, leaving it to occupy many functions throughout the years, including a hotel for foreign visitors, and even a prison. After lunch we visited two other villas, both equal, if not surpassing the 'Villa Adriana' in magnificence. The contrast between the three, and the changes not only in style but also in aesthetical value, throughout the trajectory of time (the villas were built in different periods; the first is inspired by classical Grece, the second formed the background for many famous romantic works, particularly those of Byron and Goethe, who are known to have visited the area performing their 'grand tour' common to poets of the time, and the third was a clear exhibition of baroque excess and grandeur) were the most striking features of today's visits, along with the conjecture of not only one time, but in fact, that of several intricately linked portions of history. - Marchella, 6.E.
De tweede dag, 11 april
We hadden een drukke dag voor de boeg en moesten al om zes uur opstaan. Na een lange busrit van drie uur kwamen we aan in Rome op het station Termini. We lieten onze bagage achter in een kluis. Toen kwamen we op het metro station bij het Colosseum en liepen we verder met meneer Marcheggiano. Eenmaal in het Colosseum was iedereen helemaal verbaasd hoe groot het in werkelijkheid wel niet was. Het idee dat het in vier jaar gebouwd was is bijna "eng". Na een grote wandeling zijn we met z'n allen naar een leuk restaurantje geweest waar we lekker gegeten hebben. Toen we daar weggingen werd het prachtig weer en gingen alle regenjassen uit. We zijn al lopend naar het Forum Trajanus geweest waar we de Zuil van Trajanus hebben gezien. Daarna zijn we naar het Forum Romanum geweest en het Palatijn waar we de "resten" van het Circus Maximus hebben gezien, dat was echt heel erg mooi en vooral enorm groot. Daarna zijn we onze bagage op het station gaan halen met het leuke vooruitzicht om weer drie uur in de bus te zitten, naar ons nieuwe hotel.(wat overgens wel de moeite waard was) Alexandra 3N
De derde dag, 12 april
We moesten ook vandaag weer vroeg uit bed om na het ontbijt onze koffers alweer in de bus te laden. We gingen eerst op weg naar de vulkaan krater genaamd Solfatara, wat een praktisch uitgestorven vulkaan was die goed uitgelegd werd door een gids die half italiaans en half engels kon, er kwamen erg veel dampen uit de zwavelgrond die daar lag en het was er lekker warm maar het stonk wel behoorlijk! Toen we klaar waren met de stank en de hitte zijn we met de bus naar Pozzuoli gegaan waar we een amfitheater geweest zijn die wel kleiner was dan het Colosseum maar waar je de bouw van een amfitheater wel goed kon zien! We hebben daarna een kleine wandeling gemaakt langs het heiligdom van Serapis. Het was toen alweer etenstijd en we zijn toen met de bus naar Pompeii gegaan om te genieten van de lunchpakketten van ons hotel. Het was dan toch tijd om erop uit te trekken in het oude Pomepii waar we onder andere de mooie en grote villa van Meander hebben bekeken en ook de villa van Les Amous Dores geweest zijn. Ik vond ook dat je in de stad het romeinse leven goed kon voorstellen! Daarna was het alweer wat later en zijn we weer met de bus naar een nieuw (alweer!) hotel gegaan. Christiaan, 3N
Second day 11 april
After waking up at 6:30 and having a small breakfast, we started our journey into ancient Rome. The trip went by slowly, but finally we were there. We took a metro to the Colosseum were we met with the director of the school for the day. After the Colosseum, we went to a "typical" Italian lunch - the same as almost every other day. We then went on to the Forum Trajanum and the Trajan column and were amazed at the size and intricassy of the column. Later we visited the Capitoline Hill and had an astounding view over the Forum Romanum. This we entered and had a LONG walk inside, looking at the many Ancient Roman buildings inside. We then ascended the Palatine Hill and had a breath-taking view of Rome. Being very tired, we retired to our hotel (3 hours away) and had a dinner very similar to the lunch. third day 12 April
We started the day in our seond hotel with a satisfactory breakfast and some hot chocolate for a change. After the another long bus ride we arrived at "Solfatara" or Solfatare, A charming guide gave us a stunning tour of the volcano and showed us some of the more interesting aspects of the active volcano. Then, after a small snack-stop, we went to the "Flavian Amphitheatre" and we learned some facts about its creation and architecture. Following this we took a bus to Pompeii, where we ate lunch ( which was unsatisfactory for vegetarians ) and entered the ancient city of Pompeii. We saw some of the more famous parts of this dead city and learnt much about it. After walking around for many hours we lead our tired feet away from Pompeii and towards the welcoming bus where we laid our feet to rest and enjoyed the trip to our new hotel. We ate a lovely dinner after reaching the destination and we slept a good night's sleep. Abinav 3E
deuxième jour,
Nous nous sommes réveilles a 6h , les profs sont des sadiques! Nous avons pris un petit dejeuner élastique. Apres avoir pris le bus et le metro, nous avons eu la surprise de trouver Mr Marcheggiano qui nous attendait depuis une heure , complètement desespéré... Nous avons visité le Colisée sous la pluie mais pour nous rèconforter nous avons eu droit a un repas au restaurant: c'était quand meme mieux que les infames paniers repas de l'hotel Succi que nous avions eus la veille.
L'après midi a été consacré a la marche, a la marche , et encore a la marche! Mais nous sommes maintenant incollables sur le forum et le palatin, il vaut mieux vu le test qui nous attend!
Le soir, nous avons eu un copieu repas a l'hotel Casareccia : comme toujours, c'étaient des pates, mais cette fois ci, cuites a la perfection! Nous étions tellement épuisés que nous sommes tombés comme des mouches dans nos petits lits douillets.♥
Samedi 12 avril :
Le 3ème jour de souffrance a débuté a 6h30 du matin grace au coup de téléphone que mr Van Daal nous a gentiment passé. Nous sommes partis sous une pluie battante mais heureusement le soleil est apparut juste au moment où nous sortions du bus pour visiter la Solfatare, l'ancien cratère d'un volcan qui sentait très fort l'oeuf pourri. Nous avons fait des experiences un peu particulières. Par exemple, plusieurs d'entre nous ont dù se placer devant une bouche de vapeur bouillante et que notre guide a essayé de nous faire frire comme des saucisses sur un barbecue.
Après un rapide tour de Puzzoles, nous avons mangé à Pompei un panier repas avant de commencer la visite: 4h a essayer de rattraper mr Durand qui courait dans tous les sens!! Cette journée a été instructive mais comme d'habitude épuisante. Pour nous récompenser, nous avons eu de la pizza à la place des pates. Et notre équipe de foot a gagné 13:0 contre les Italiens de l'hotel.

Zondag 13 april
Na een stevig ontbijt en een goede nachtrust reden we naar het zuiden naar Paestum. Paestum was eerst een Griekse kolonie maar het werd daarna een Romeinse stad. De drie Grieks tempels waren nog zeer goed bewaard. Ik vond dat je er echt een goed beeld kreeg van hoe een tempel er vroeger uitzag. De resten van de romeinse stad echter waren veel slechter bewaard gebleven en ze gaven meer de indruk van op elkaar gestapelde stenen te zijn dan een gebouw, maar met een beetje inbeeldingsvermogen kon je er toch iets van maken. Na dit bezoek gingen we ons eerste echt goede lunchpakket verorberen naast de site. Voor het bezoek aan het museum hadden we nog zat vrije tijd om in de souvenirwinkels de tourist uit te kunnen hangen. In het museum was het mooiste het graf van de duiker. Het was een mooi bewaard graf. Daarna reden we met de bus terug en we kwamen eens vroeger dan anders in het hotel terug aan. We voetbalden nog terwijl we wachtten op de Italianen van de buurt om het tegen ons op te nemen( gisteren hadden we ze afgemaakt en dat hoop ik
nog een keer te doen).

After a better breakfast than the others (because of the chocolat spred) we had a " hour bustrip to go to a place called Poseidonia. There there were ruins of temples. The temple of Posidon, Hera and Athena. They were quite big and extremely well preserved. The temple of Posidon was the best preserved and therefore the most beautiful. There were also ruins of a foro and houses, the normal things in a Roman village. We ate lunch after visiting the temples (which was also better then the lest ones). Soon after that we took a tour through a museum which was full of things that archiologists had discoverd, there were urns carvings things that served as gutters etc. We then took a bus trip to the beach and frolocked around a bit. We went back to the Hotel tired and content. Most of the pupils either played and or supported football until dinner.

Hier nous étions priviligiés : nous avons eu de la bonne pizza napolitana, grace à de beaux italiens ♥. Aujourd'hui SURPRISE ! On a eu de la pate à tartiner au chocolat, de délicieux yahourts et du bon pain italien (ciabatta). Après ce délicieux petit déjeuner, notre journée commença beaucoup mieux que les autres jours et nous sommes partis vers les temples de Paestum. Nous avons vu trois temples : le temple d'Hera, le temple d'Athena et le temple de Poséidon.
Ensuite, nous avons mangé le dèjeuner et fait les boutiques pendant une heure. =D A 1h30 nous avons visité le musée qui était un peu ennuyeux mais légèrement intéressant. Le fin de l'après midi a été merveilleuse, on est allés à la plage où notre photographe personel et professionel (Evelyne) a pris beaucoup de magnifiques photos de Celia, Juliette et Elisabeth...
Et c'est ainsi que s'acheva notre journée en Campanie avant le diner tout au moins.

Dag 5
Vesuvius en toch Herculaneum!!!
We werden tot vreugde van sommigen gewekt door vrolijke Italiaanse volksmuziek. Omdat we snel moesten vertrekken aten we het ontbijt heel snel op. We beklommen daarna de nog steeds actieve Vesuvius,( er restte slechts nog een klein stukje, omdat we een groot deel met de bus deden). Daarna zagen we dat onze vrije tijd moest wijken om Herculaneum te bezoeken. Het was een mooie site, maar het wow-effect was er al af, omdat we al iets soortgelijk gezien hadden in Pompei. Toen aten we een koningsmaaltijd, bestaande uit taaie sandwiches met een cakeje en een gedeukte appelsien. Met goed gevulde magen gingen we naar het Archeologisch museum van Napels. Daar waren mooie mozaieken en wandschilderingen te zien. Hierna reden we met de bus naar het hotel, waar we na het eten en het ondertussen dagelijks geworden kaarten gingen slapen. Jonas 5N
Dag 6
Rome and The vatican
Today, after a satisfactory breakfast, we started at 7 and we went to Rome. We took a metro to the national museum of Rome which held stunnung displays of ancient Roman artifacts and art. After getting lost a few times in this museum, we went to the Piazza di Spagna. There we took the metro again and we went to eat lunch at a restaurant. This was the best part of the day because we got a delicious pizza there. After, we had a tiring walk all the way to the Vatican City where we went to another museum, which was some what more interestig because it held all the art which the various Popes had collected over the decades. While we were here, we also tried to sneak a peek into the Pope's private gardens but we didn't glimpse much through the windows. As soon as we had finished this, we went to look at St Peter's magnificent cathedral. We had another long and tiring walk back to the metro, and there, we gladly rested our exhausted feet in the bus.
