Social fund

In the first ten years or so, after the opening of the European School in Mol in 1960, it became clear that some of the pupils who had passed the Baccalaureate, were experiencing financial difficulties during their university studies.

At that time a proportion of pupils at the European School were children from the large families of coal miners in the Limburg coalfield, and while the school fees were then very low, university studies were a real financial challenge for them.

In response to this some teachers decided to set up a "Social Fund" to collect money to do something help these ex-pupils fulfil the potential they had shown at school. The money came, and still comes, from contributions from teachers, parents and from activities organised at the school, such as the Christmas Fair or the evening organised by the Parents' Association in the summer.

As the years have gone by, the number of requests for help from ex-pupils has declined, but these have been replaced by requests from families, often with more than one child at the school, who have a low income, for help with school costs, and in particular, for help with the costs of school journeys. Now that school fees are at a much higher level, it can be difficult for a family with an average income to face up to these extra expenses. Yet these families are often very motivated to send their children to our school, and these children are often those who benefit most from the education that the European system can offer.

After checking to see that the need is genuine, we try to give enough to make it possible for the children to participate in the activity. In this way, our less well-off pupils are able to play a full part in school life. Please make a contribution to the European School of Mol Social Fund. Our reserves are very limited.
